Preliminary planning makes the installer's job much easier and ensures
that the slabs are installed properly when starting a project. First
sketch out the area where your patio or walkway is to be located
and use the slab specification chart to identify slab sizes. The
sketch is useful in determining the number of slabs and curbs and
the quantity of base material required.
PREPARATION
Prepare the site by excavating the soil to a depth of 6-8 inches
below the desired final grade of the patio or walk.
Replace the soil with 3-5 inches of granular 'A' or other suitable
material. This provides a firm base and allows for proper drainage.
Compact base material to desired grade and contour using a mechanical
vibrating plate tamper.
Then spread a layer of sand approximately 1" thick over entire area
of compacted base. By drawing a straight board across an edge restraint
such as a landscape curb or any other guide (eg. 3/4" to 1" pipe
or lumber) spread sand until level. Do not walk on or disturb the
levelled sand.
Always start at a straight edge or string line, nesting each slab
in place according to the design chosen. |
