RETAINING WALL IDEAS TO INSPIRE YOUR NEXT PROJECT

There are so many uses, types, sizes and styles of retaining walls. It is definitely NOT one size fits all. Your project may be a fit for a freestanding wall, a knee wall, or maybe a sitting wall or bench. Maybe you are working around gardening or a path and need a tree ring, garden border, columns or transition to a sidewalk. A straight wall might work, or you need a curved or serpentine shape.

Every project deserves the right wall, big or small. It starts with the materials. You can go with a concrete brick option, natural stone, wood or timber, or one of the many types of concrete block stacking systems on the market.

For a small garden wall, accent wall, planters up to about 30 inches high, a 12 inch long x 4 inch block is a good place to start. Heavy-duty large wall projects up to 20-30 feet tall, a large 18 inch x 8 inch block is more suitable. Anything more than 4 feet tall needs to be done by a licensed engineer who can determine the right materials and installation to be strong enough.

In general, for the nicest look, most durable walls that can be built fairly easily, concrete blocks and stacking systems are the way to go.

What you might not spend much time thinking about is how the materials used to create your sweet new space will hold up in the colder months. Will the winter wear down your outdoor patio?

COLD WEATHER IMPACT ON YOUR OUTDOOR PATIO

Yes, it’s true that the cold weather does affect the stone and brick in your outdoor patio. The freeze-thaw cycles in the winter months are just what you’d expect – moisture inside the mortar joints or in the ground underneath pavement will freeze and thaw out.

When the temperature falls below 32 degrees Fahrenheit and the moisture freezes, it expands. Then, of course, when it thaws, it contracts. The repeating of this process is what can lead to damage, mostly in the form of cracks in concrete, brick, and stone.

We see this in poured concrete because of its rigid nature. In the expanding and thawing cycle, poured concrete has little ability to move. When it can’t move or flex, cracks form.

The good news is that the higher the quality of the brick, stone and pavement products you use, the better it will withstand the harsh winter cycles.

CONCRETE RETAINING WALLS KEEP THAT WINTER WIND AT BAY.

Can a concrete retaining wall block act as an air barrier? You bet your bottom. Building a wall around your patio can help block those nasty winter winds from ruining a fun night around the bonfire. A CONCRETE WAY TO FIX UP YOUR CONCRETE PATIO.

If you’re considering laying down concrete for the first time this season, consider concrete pavers instead of ready-mix or poured concrete. Interlocking concrete pavers and concrete paving slabs are inherently flexible, unlike poured concrete.

This flexibility is key to long-term performance in cold regions where concrete is susceptible to freeze-thaw conditions and regions with expansive soils. Poured concrete is a rigid pavement so, in freeze-thaw conditions and on expansive soils, it can’t move or flex, resulting in unsightly cracks and unevenness.

How do you make sure you’re prepared? Follow these four tips to get your garden ready for the fall harvest!

A PERFECT GARDEN STARTS WITH THE PERFECT PLANTER.

Unfortunately, this isn’t as simple as hammering some plywood together, throwing in some dirt, and calling it a day.

You’ll need to pre-plan for elements such as:

Irrigation and Erosion: How will you protect your land from erosion? How will you make sure irrigation will be even and consistent?
The right structure: What kind of seal and adhesive will you need to make sure your water doesn’t leak from your planter? If you’re not using a raised planter, will you need a retaining wall or blocks for edging?
Plant growth habits: Some plants will need a little extra structure to give them a leg up. In other words, make sure you are equipped with trellises, wire cones, or the stakes your plants need to survive.
Protection from birds and squirrels. What nets and protective devices will you need to protect against ambitious critters?

It’s important to find out which plants you can plant now that will yield the best results come autumn.

If you’re a veggie lover try these: beets, radishes, string beans, corn, squash, lettuce, green onions, broccoli, parsley, peas, or turnips!

If you’re more about the aesthetics than the eats, try these flowers: daisies, marigolds, asters, oriental lilies, chrysanthemums, balloon flowers, and black-eyed susans.

Here are a few added nuances to keep in mind when you are thinking about what to grow:

Don’t put plants in with other plants that are extremely prolific or invasive. I.e. If you plant pumpkins, do it away from every other plant!
Make sure to consider when you will be harvesting each crop. For example, say you are growing radishes for some autumn salads. Radishes take, from seed to harvest, about 22 to 70 days, depending on the radish variety and season. On the other hand, lettuce takes between 45 to 100 days to be ready for harvest. In all likelihood, depending on variety, you’ll need to plant your lettuce before you plant your radishes to make sure they are ready for harvest at the same time.
Make sure you have the right size planter for your plant. Too big or too small and your plant may not grow to its full potential!

CHOOSE THE RIGHT IRRIGATION SYSTEM, REPELLANTS AND FERTILIZER FOR YOUR PLANTS!

Do you need a drip system? Or is simple surface irrigation better for your plants?

Are insects your main concern? Or do you need to make sure you’re keeping the bunnies out of the turnips?

Is it more important to have a water soluble fertilizer or is controlled release your main priority?

Make sure to do your research to see how your garden thrives best and pair the plants that will thrive together. Also, remember that your local ecology can affect moisture, soil quality and richness, and common pests. Be sure to consult your local nursery on the right strategy for your garden.

Location, location, location.

It’s not only an apt axiom for real estate, but is important when you think about gardening–especially in the fall! Spring is one of the most-awaited seasons in New York. The plants begin to bloom and as we say goodbye to the cold winter weather. It’s also the perfect time to revamp our home and give it a proper spring cleaning.

One of the main spots that you need to focus on cleaning is your patio. This outdoor space allows us to unwind, relax, and spend some time with our family and friends. Patios can make your place homier and can add value to your property – that’s why you need to make sure that it’s always in good condition.

Whether you want to make a major upgrade or you just want to get it ready for the warmer days ahead, here are some ways to brighten up your patio for the spring season.

SCRUB THE PATIO FLOOR

Winter is over, your patio area is finally snow-free and it’s now time to clean your floors to remove any winter debris. Wet the area by using a pressure washer hose, use waterproof gloves (knee pads might come in handy, too!) and scrub the entire floor with a hard-bristled brush.

Can you believe 2017 is less than two months away? Neither can we. Design trends are always changing and 2016 was no different. As 2016 come to a close, we look back on the design trends really caught on this past year.

GEOMETRIC TILES

Tiles are getting bolder and geometric tiles were very much “in” this past year. These tiles were used for kitchen backsplashes, guest bedrooms and even outdoor spaces in the form of cement tiles. These kinds of tiles really are a great choice when you’re looking for that wow factor.

GRAY

Gray’s really made a splash in 2016, and not just lighter grays, but darker grays including charcoal. As gray continues to grow in popularity, we’ve seen it showing up more as a paint color in living rooms, bedrooms and bathrooms. It really is a great option if you want the darker color but don’t want to make the room feel too small.

GRAPHIC PILLOWS

Like artwork, throw pillows are an amazing way to add some color and character to a space. Bold and graphic pillows were in this year. Pillows are great because they can be changed in and out and are very versatile.

NEUTRAL COLOR PALETTES

While tile and throw pillows are all moved toward the bold and graphic, calm neutral color palettes were also among the “in crowd.” There was a move back toward more understated, simple color schemes that managed to feel very classic and modern.

METALLIC WALLPAPER

Wallpaper is another trend that’s stayed strong throughout 2016 more specifically, metallic wallpaper. Silver, gold and copper is finding its way into a variety of wallpaper collections, and it really brings some sparkle and interest into a space. If you’re hesitant to cover the entire room in metallic wallpaper, try using it solely as an accent wall.

Colder temperatures and soon, falling leaves serve as a reminder that the fall season is fast approaching. As the seasons change, so do our activities and home needs. Even though summer isn’t officially over just yet, it’s a good time to do some seasonal maintenance to keep your home running smoothly. We know the weather can change quickly, especially in our area. Some attention now will save costly repairs and aggravation later.

Stow Your Mower
Fuel stabilizer could be your best friend soon. If your mower sits for months with gas in its tank, the gas will slowly deteriorate, which can damage internal engine parts. Fuel stabilizer prevents gas from degrading. Adding stabilizer to your gasoline can keep the gas already in the tank in good condition over the winter. It’s important to run the mower for five minutes to make sure the stabilizer reaches the carburetor.

Bring in Hoses
Remove garden hoses from outdoor faucets. Leaving hoses attached can cause water to back up in the faucets and in the plumbing pipes just inside your exterior walls. If freezing temps hit, and they will, that water could freeze, expand and crack the faucet or pipes.

Caulk
Walk around the perimeter of your home with a couple tubes of color matching exterior caulk. Seal up any cracks between the trim and siding, around windows and door frames, that includes where pipes and wires enter the house. Preventing moisture from getting inside your walls is one of the least expensive, and most important tasks of fall maintenance jobs.

Clean Out Gutters
Clogged rain gutters can cause ice dams, which can lead to expensive repairs. After the leaves have fallen, clean your gutters to remove leaves, twigs and gunk. Make sure gutters aren’t sagging and trapping water; tighten gutter hangers and downspout brackets. Replace any worn or damaged gutters and downspouts.

Check Your Furnace
Schedule an appointment with a heating and cooling pro to get your heating system checked and tuned up for the upcoming winter. It’s important to change your filters too. This is a job you should do every two months anyway, however, if you haven’t now’s the time. If your HVAC includes a built-in humidifier, make sure the contractor replaces that filter.

As you enjoy the last days of nice weather, make sure your home is prepared for the upcoming fall season. Preventative maintenance now will save money on expensive emergency repairs and wasted energy costs.

Hardscaping offers a number of appealing options including anything from rustic stacked walls to a fully developed outdoor living space and kitchen. Once you’ve decided to create an outdoor space, it’s important to plan carefully to not only ensure you’re getting what you want, but to also not go over budget.

THINK ABOUT THE LANDSCAPING

Take into account the entire area that is available for hardscaping before you go into the design, even if it is just one space. At the very minimum, you should plan a design for the whole area or speak to a professional to create a design for you. If you don’t consider the entire site comprehensively, it’s as if you are building one room of a house and then a year later, a second room.

DIVE INTO DRAINING ISSUES

It is important to plan how the drainage will be affected when you place a wall or patio. There are also environmental considerations to be taken into account. For example, you should plan a runoff so you can capture the water and use it on site, instead of letting it hit that concrete and go down the drainage pipe.

DEVELOP A FO CAL POINT

You want the eye to travel toward a destination by adding one or two visual elements that make you stop, either visual or literally. Something simple that could work in this regard is a weeping evergreen with an Oriental lantern.

CHOOSE BALANCED ELEMENTS

Plopping a giant boulder down simply doesn’t work. To successfully use boulders in hardscape projects, you need to make sure they’re large enough to fit with the scale of the landscape, and bury them deep enough so they look like a naturally-occurring element. Additionally, too-linear elements can create the same unnatural feel. Putting in a straight or L-shaped sidewalk, or sticking a linear or rectangular patio on the back of the house without giving further thought to the natural lines of the space makes this look awkward. Try to include curves and shapes in a way that the hardscape elements transition gracefully into the rest of the landscape.

KEEP IT GREEN

You will see those in the southwestern part of the country use stone or concrete in large spaces. This however is out of necessity. Take advantage of our climate and include ample vegetation in relation to hard surfaces. It’s important to keep a small space of grass too. This is a safer playing surface for children and a patch of turf will help cool down the landscape on hot sunny days.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT MATERIALS

After selecting your style, choose a few materials that complement your home’s interior and exterior. You don’t want to have to look at a hardscape with all one color or material. Try to find two or three materials that are visually creative and coordinate not just with each other but with the interior and exterior of the house.

Keeping these things in mind will ensure your patio is a beautiful place for your friends and family to enjoy.

Hardscape First

It’s important to do all of the hardscaping projects before you plant anything. This can include a sidewalk, porch, driveway, parking areas, decks, fencing and more. These types of projects can, and most likely will impact your soil and lawn as it involves construction. You don’t want construction equipment to ruin your newly planted shrubs!

Take Care of the Soil

When it’s time to plant, give your soil a boost by adding organic matter like peat moss or leaf mold before you set the plants into their new home. Loose, fertile soil will encourage root growth on new plantings and allot them to become established quickly.

Plant Next to your House

Your foundation planting should embrace your house, not cover it. Low-growing shrubs should be planted in front of low windows and porches. Larger rounded shrubs or even small trees work well planted on the corners of a home. These larger plants will help compliment the box-like structure.

Head to the Back

Your backyard is the perfect space for an outdoor living area. If you need some privacy, install wooden fencing or large shrubs around the perimeter to create walls. Additionally, decks and patios make for great sitting or dining areas when the upstate New York weather permits.

What do you Want, What do you Need

Think about the available space you have. If you have a sunny backyard you might consider putting in a kitchen garden where you can grow a few herbs or veggies. Just make sure the area you choose receives several hours of sun. What about kids? Do you need a children’s play area? If the answer is yes, position it where you can see it from your deck or patio to keep an eye on the kids playing.

Choose the Right Plants

Before planting anything, study your landscape. See where the sun rises and sets. Some plants love the morning sun but don’t do well with the evening sun. Be sure to talk to your local garden center about the plants you would like to plant.

Planning out your landscaping in both the front yard and backyard is important. Many people however forget the maintenance part. To keep a beautiful landscape it must be maintained. Mulch makes landscaping looked finished but it also helps soil retain moisture and keeps weeds in check. Once you’ve finished the hard work, be sure to keep it looking great!

All commercial buildings in climate zones 4-8 are required to comply with specific requirements. In addition to the performance requirements, there are a number of “deem-to-comply” options. These would not require any additional testing, but would automatically comply with air barrier requirements.

FAQ: EQUIVALENT R-VALUE

CAN “EQUIVALENT R-VALUE” BE USED TO DETERMINE COMPLIANCE WITH MASS WALL ENERGY CODE REQUIREMENTS?

In short, no. The Equivalent R-Value of concrete masonry assemblies (or any mass wall system) cannot be used to determine compliance with energy code requirements. Despite the prevalent use of the term Equivalent R-Value, there is no single, standard method of determining such a property for material or assembly.

While Equivalent R-Values can help to illustrate that concrete masonry mass wall assemblies do not require the same level of insulation as non-mass assemblies while provided the same or better level of thermal efficiency, they cannot be used to determine compliance with energy codes.

What’s important to note is that building codes and standards use the term Equivalent R-Value in the context of steel frame construction. In this context, the term effective R-Value is accounting for extremely high level of thermal bridging that occurs in steel stud construction.

Spring is finally here and that means putting those plans you made for your landscaping into action. Now days, our landscapes are becoming extensions of our homes. They bring us outdoors and provide a great place to entertain or even relax.

So where do you start?

Start by asking yourself some initial questions. Consider your personal style, are you traditional, natural or contemporary? Think about the existing area, do you want to use the same material as your house or other structures or do you want something different? Figure out whether you want to create color contrasts or use simple hues of a single color.

Think about the type of material that’s best for your project. Stone is sold by the ton and decomposed granite by the yard. Don’t worry about trying to figure out exactly how much you’ll need, your local landscape company will be able to help you based on your measurements.

For hardscape projects, here are some of the commonly used choices.

Chopped Block: Most stone can be purchased as a rough-hewn brick-like shape that is more natural in form. These are used to build retaining walls, planting beds and even pathway borders. River rock, flagstone, chopped block and other stones come in specific palettes of color. From golds to browns and reds, grays and pinks, choosing the right block color is like choosing a paint color for your house.

Decomposed or Crushed Granite: This type of stone is usually used in patios and paths. It’s a great filler for many different projects, except on steep slopes.

Flagstone: This type of stone can be used in a number of landscaping projects, from paths to patios to walls. It can be mortared into place or set in decomposed granite or gravel so water can pass through it. This is important especially with our winters as freezing water could spell bad news. Do you have a sidewalk strip in front of your house where the grass just can’t seem to stay green? Try some flagstone set in decomposed granite.

Gravel: Great for addressing drainage issues and it adds some texture and contrast to the garden. It also comes in a variety of different colors.

Pavers: Like gravel, pavers come in a number of different colors. The most commonly used are made of concrete and can be used for patios, porches, paths and even walls. Pavers are extremely versatile. They can be placed on sand, either close together for a more “structured” look or even laid to be set apart to allow for grass to grow between.

River Rock: Available in a number of size ranges, river rock is smooth and comes in a blend of colors. It can be used to create a meandering dry stream through your landscaping or to solve drainage issues. Additionally, you can simply replace grass with a great looking contrast of natural material in your yard. It’s important to note, you will want to vary the size of the rock in a dry creek, scattering in the larger rocks before you put down the smaller size for a more natural look.

Adding different types of material to your landscaping can make it interesting and inviting. Creating contrast and texture that enhances the curb appeal of your home.

DRY IT OUT

Water can be a huge problem and is a common occurrence in many basements. If the prep work is done right, it can prevent future issues. If your basement is constantly damp, Add insulation and an HVAC system to keep it dry.

PICK THE RIGHT FLOORING

February is the month with the fewest number of days, one of them of course is Valentine’s Day. So why not put the days to good use and show your house some love. Change your furnace filters, restore your kitchen cabinets and add some architectural detail to a bland room.

CHANGE YOUR FURNACE FILTER

The heating season is in full swing. Since most of the air in your house circulates through your HVAC system, furnace filters are first in line of defense against dust and airborne allergens. Basic furnace filters are designed to trap dust, dirt and other particles before they get into your system and do some real damage.

How do you know when it’s time to change a furnace filter? Below are some general guidelines however, it is always a good idea to check your owner’s manual for the manufacturer’s maintenance recommendations. Usually, you should change a basic furnace filter every one to two months. This all depends on if you have furry pets, you notice moderate buildup in your house or if you live with a smoker.

GIVE YOUR CABINETS A FACELIFT

You use your kitchen a lot right? So it doesn’t take long to start to see signs of wear and tear on the wood cabinets. Good news is you don’t have to spend a ton of money on a complete replacement. You can do a simple DIY restoration. If the wood stain on your cabinets has worn out, try cleaning with a mix of TSP and water. When dry, sand lightly and use a tack cloth to remove dust. Then apply a polyurethane varnish tinted to whatever tone you like. This varnish-stain combo will do the job in one application.

Tired of the wood look? Give your cabinets, and kitchen a whole new look with a fresh coat of paint.

ADD ARCHITECTURE

If you’re feeling the post holiday blues, here are some simple home improvement projects to get you moving.

INSTALL A BACKSPLASH

Backsplashes are to kitchens, as basil is to spaghetti sauce, they’re essential for completing the flavor. If you want to spruce up the appeal of your kitchen, a backsplash will help accessorize and emphasize your countertops, cabinets and appliances. For a kitchen that needs color and life, textured tile can wake up any plain countertop.

CHANGE OUT YOUR LIGHT BULBS

This takes a bit of an upfront investment as you will be installing energy efficient light bulbs, but these new bulbs have huge cost saving benefits. On average, an Energy Star qualified light bulb will save more than $40 in electricity costs over its lifetime so don’t let the upfront cost of these bulbs scare you.

DO SOME PAINTING

Did you know that cold weather is perfect for drying paint? Fall is well underway, that means one thing, winter is right around the corner. This means it’s about that time to prepare your home for the cold winter. Don’t worry, for many of these steps, there’s no need to hire a contractor, you can actually do a number of them on your own! These steps will be extremely important in lowering your utility bills and protect your investment.

TUNE UP YOUR HEATING SYSTEM

For around $100 a technician will inspect your furnace or heat pump to be sure the system is clean and in good repair, and that it can achieve its manufacturer-rated efficiency. The inspection also measures carbon-monoxide leakage. If you act soon, you’ll minimize the chance of being 150th in a long line of customers needing repair. When looking for a contractor, be sure to find one that belongs to the Air Conditioning Contractors of America.

REVERSE YOUR CEILING FANS

If your ceiling fan has a reverse switch, use it to run the fan’s blades in a clockwise direction after you turn on your heat. According to energy star, the fan will produce enough of an updraft and push down into the room heated air from the ceiling since hot air rises. This is especially helpful for rooms with high ceilings.

PREVENT ICE DAMS

Adding stabilizers to your fuel helps keep the gas fresh longer, if you haven’t added it yet, will the tank to the top and let it run for a bit so the fuel stabilizer circulates.

KEEP IT WARM AND COMFORTABLE

One of the main reasons people enjoy having a patio is because they want to be able to entertain outdoors. The cooler weather however, causes a bit of a dilemma for homeowners who aren’t equipped. To battle the issue, consider buying an outdoor heater to help generate the warmth you need to stay comfortable.

There are a variety of options from table-top to wall-hanging, there are many different types of heaters that will keep you and your guests warm on the patio. Another alternative is installing a fireplace. Not only will it generate the heat you want, but the kids love it as they can roast marshmallows. Free standing fire pits are usually more affordable but you can incorporate a fire pit into your existing patio.

GET COVERED

Fall winds can quickly cool your outdoor patio area and leave you wanting to be back inside. However, if you use the right coverage, you can keep the warmth in and the cold weather at bay. Consider a canopy or other enclosure that has transparent or even screen doors and windows that allow you to take in the views but not the elements. You could even consider permanently enclosing a portion of your patio, this will cost quite a bit more however.

Soon the kids will be going back to school and the fall season will be upon us. That only means one thing, summer is over. As fall approaches, so does relief from the summer heat. This makes for the perfect time to start thinking about how the change of seasons will translate into changes in your landscaping. Adjusting your landscaping practices now will pave the way for a smooth transition for your plants and keep the work from piling up around the first frost. It could even give you some time to squeeze in a few last minute projects.

CORE AERATION

You’ve seen a recently aerated lawn as small plugs of soil can be seen at the surface level, exposing layers of soil below. Aerating your lawn as plenty of benefits including; relieves soil compaction, helps manage thatch, improves penetration of air, water and nutrients into the soil, and stimulates growth. Timing is critical when you’re thinking about aerating your lawn. Fall is the preferred time of year as it allows time for recovery prior to dormancy.

GET AHEAD OF THE GAME

Damage from pests such as chinch bugs, mole crickets and ants rear their ugly head after mid August. Grubs can be especially problematic. In the spring, grubs are usually too mature to be controlled by pesticides. IS IT TIME FOR A BACKYARD MAKEOVER?

Do you neglect spending time in your backyard simply because you have a dilapidated deck or worn out patio? Is your backyard space large enough to entertain guests, but lacks visual appeal? If you said yes to either of these it sounds like you realize your backyard has great potential and you’re ready to make that potential a reality.

IT’S TIME FOR A BACKYARD MAKEOVER!

There are a few questions you need to ask yourself: What do I want my backyard to do? Do I want to entertain? Do I want privacy to relax? What about the climate we live in, will this impact what you decide to do?

REPLACE OUTDATED MATERIALS

Some backyards seem as though they were left and forgotten about in the 1980’s. The materials are old, cracked and generally not useable anymore. OVERRUN WITH WEEDS & DESIGN DILEMMAS

Like our prior patio stuck in the 1980’s, these patio’s are also overrun with weeds and unwanted plants. Weeds breaking through the concrete and plants or trees making it difficult to even see where the patio is. This can all hinder the vision and be overwhelming. Cut the landscaping out and start with what is essentially a blank canvas, using trees to your advantage. Trees can be worked around and provide the best thing in hot summer months – shade.

RETAINING WALL TLC

Retaining walls that were not properly installed, or ones that have been neglected, can be become yet another eye sore and may not even do their job correctly. If your wall was installed correctly, there will be drainage openings for the water to escape and not sit behind the wall (this will cause issues). The area around these drainage holes are prime real estate for mold and mildew. Taking a power washer and cleaner can make your wall look brand new.

On the other end, if your wall is falling down and looks like it’s on the verge of collapse, it was not properly installed. It may be missing crushed stone, proper drainage or more. Walls can look great and provide you with more room by holding landscaping back. In order to achieve this however, the installation process is key.

DRAINAGE

How often do you come home from work only to find that you don’t feel comfortable relaxing at home? With a little bit of DIY love, you can create a rustic stone veneer bar that actually makes you feel excited to walk in the door and grab a cold one after a hard day’s work. Let’s say you already have a bar in your basement, but it lacks the exquisite stone detailing that would make it attractive and fun. These steps will walk you through the process of creating a gorgeous veneer that will impress anybody.

1. PREPARE FOR THE PROJECT.

Now, you don’t need a reminder to keep your work area safe, right? Use some thick sheeting, tarps or blankets to cover the floor. This will prevent rough stone from scratching your floors. Don’t forget to grab some gloves to protect your hands too.

2. CREATE A SUPPORTIVE SURFACE FOR THE VENEER.

Most bars are made out of wood; however, you may want to use plasterboard as well if you’re starting from scratch. The stone that you use should not be too heavy and unless you have proper footing set in place. Keep it under 15 lbs./sf. Additionally, you want to ensure that your surface isn’t going to allow moisture to invade the veneer. Asphalt felt will do the trick. Just staple it to the wall of the bar with about 2 inches of overlap on the edges.

3. COVER THE FELT WITH METAL LATH.

You are relying on the asphalt felt to keep moisture away, but you still need a surface that will hold your stones and mortar in place. This is where the metal lath comes in. As you trail your finger along the applied metal lath, it should feel smooth moving upward and rough downward. This rough texture has an advantage — it creates a better hold. As you go about completing this step, ensure that you are cutting around all outlets with wire snips. Drywall screws are best used to hold the metal lathe in place. Once you have the lathe secured, you are ready to start applying your stones.

4. LAY IT ALL OUT.

The first step to creating the perfect design for your bar is to lay everything out. Look at the range of colors in your repertoire and think about the size of the different pieces. Make sure you have a plan before you start sticking.

5. CREATE THE MORTAR.

Mortar is best mixed in a bucket or wheelbarrow. For this project, you should use a ratio of 2:1 of sand and cement. You can expect to use about 90 pounds of Type S Mortar Cement and 25 shovelfuls of mason sand. Mix these ingredients before adding water. The more you mix, the more buttery the substance should become. If you don’t want to mix the mortar yourself, you can also opt for a pre-mixed stone veneer mortar. Once its created, use a trowel to smooth it onto the metal lath. Then ‘scratch’ the mortar to create a rough surface and let it dry, or at least tacky to the touch.

6. COVER THE CORNERS.

You should always start by setting the stones nearest to the corners. You want a large stone to fit right into the corner, and you want to spread about half an inch of mortar on the back of the stone with a trowel. Don’t forget to apply mortar to the stone’s outermost corners so that they really stick. As you stick the stone to the wall, ensure that you are holding it in place until you feel no movement. Make sure to create a border along the edges before you move on to the rest of the bar. After that, you might want to move on to an x-shape. The flat edges will be more difficult for the corners due to lack of support — watch out for falling rocks!

7. COMPLETE THE PROJECT.

You should allow the mortar to dry overnight, washing the stone the next day with a sponge and some water. Ta-da! You should feel proud of yourself for completing a rustic stone veneer bar without much help at all.

First, make sure you select a stone veneer option that aligns nicely with the colors in the rest of your bathroom. Next the wall should be covered with moisture barrier paper which will protect against moisture and water damage over time. Over the top of the moisture barrier, a wire lathe should be applied so that the scratch coat (cement and sand) has a strong, rough surface to adhere to.

After applying the scratch coat, score it with a rough-bristle brush before it dries.

Once the scratch coat is dry, mortar can be applied to the back of your stone and applied to the wall.

There you have it! You now have a bathroom that doubles as a relaxing getaway – or at least a truly unique, calming environment!

THE RIGHT WAY TO INSTALL MANUFACTURED STONE VENEER

Provided you do not live in a region where old buildings are the norm where real stone is standard throughout the neighborhood, chances are the stone that you see is manufactured. If you’re a contractor looking for tips on how to install manufactured stone veneer, look no further, as there are some great tips for the job right here. However, before delving into the crash course on how to do it, let’s first take a look at what exactly it is.

WHAT IT IS

Believe it or not, manufactured stone is nothing new. Indeed, veneer stone companies have spent approximately the last thirty years or so perfecting their formula so that it appears more and more – remarkably so – like the real thing. What is it, exactly? While real stone is igneous rock, extracted from the Earth and comes in an astounding array of different sizes and colors, manufactured stone is that which is not quarried directly from Earth.

The terminology “veneer” itself implies something that is decorative or cosmetic with a functional element. It is applied on top of the surface of an original structure. For instance, installing a stone veneer fireplace surround initially made of brick delivers the impression that the fireplace is composed of real stone. Manufactured veneer is typically composed of Portland cement for durability, aggregates to lighten the weight of the stone, and iron oxides for manipulating the pigment of the stone.

Making it a bit more difficult for stone veneer installation, manufactured stone has not yet reached the DIY level of ease when it comes to the task (however it is not far from that state, so contractors, take advantage now!). Understanding that it is in fact artificial, unfortunately the installation process is still a full-blown masonry job with plenty to learn before attacking the endeavor. But fret not, after overcoming a bit of a learning curve, the job can be done – and done spectacularly. On an important side note, an exterior job, such as that of installing stone veneer siding to your house is a bit more complex than an interior job, for the very reason of precipitation. Unlike interior jobs, exterior jobs require an extra task: that of water-proofing. The surface beneath the veneer stone needs to be waterproofed, particularly because veneer is not by any means made to act as a barrier against a rainy spell – and so, extra caution must be taken.

In the case that you are laying exterior stone veneer, preparing the structure for waterproofing can be done with builder’s felt which is similar to roofing paper, builder’s paper which is a specific kraft-paper material, or house wrap.

HOW TO DO IT

Despite what may seem like high maintenance, stone veneer actually poses an easy way to create the look you are going for when it comes to creating an authentic look.

Here is a short rundown of installing manufactured stone veneer. Entire manuals can be written about the process, but the basics followed by valuable tips should have you well on your way.

Just about every stone veneer installation job begins with a couple of sheets of building paper. Next, a layer of galvanized wire lath (dimpled) is securely installed over the paper which is then coated with a ½-inch coat of Type S mortar. While still wet, the mortar is scraped, or scratched to create a texture that will make it easier for the stone to cling to strongly. About 24 hours later, when the grooved coating has dried, it is time to apply the stone. Using the same Type S mortar, adhere the stones as desired and when finished, simply touch up the project with grout between the joints of the mortared stones. Note: if your stone veneer installation is envisioned to appear dry-stacked in which case no mortar is used, no grouting is necessary; mission accomplished!

Whether you are installing stone veneer siding or an indoor fireplace, here are FOUR FANTASTIC TRICKS for streamlining the process and outputting better looking, longer-lasting work.

#1 Taming wire lath: working with this material can cause all types of snags – including some dangerous ones, since the edges of the wire can be quite sharp. To make long cuts in the wire, lay the sheet on a couple of long boards, measuring the spaces between the edge of the lath and the board on either end to ensure the line you want to cut is flush with the edge of the board. Use the edge of the board to guide your cut – and for extra security, before cutting you may want to temporarily fix the lath with a few staples to the board so it doesn’t budge and causing you to make an imprecise cut

#2 Scratching: the tool for the job: as previously mentioned, digging grooves in your mortar creates a surface that will make it easier for stones to bond to it – and stay put! There are small tools for completing this part of the task, however, a square-notched tile mastic trowel is the perfect candidate for the job. Not only are they less expensive than other gadgets, but they scratch a larger surface area at once making for more accurate – and faster – production.

#3 Make that stone stick: using a trowel, slather a good amount of mortar on the back of a stone, making sure to create a thick enough layer (about ½ -inch) around the entire perimeter of the stone. Do this in a circular motion, which will create a small hollow space in the middle of the stone’s back to create a suction, and enforce the stone’s adherence to your scratched mortar. Be sure to keep the edges of the stone free of any oozing mortar so it does not harden and become an obstacle when it comes time to grouting.

#4 Resist cleaning up wet mortar: dropping globs of mortar here and there is pretty much par for the course when it comes to this type of project. It can be nerve-wracking when it comes to jobs that require a bit more tidiness such as installing stone veneer fireplace surround. Don’t cry over spilled mud! Simply let it dry and as it hardens, flick it away with your trowel. Trying to clean up your mess beforehand is apt to create a smeared mess more difficult to clean up.

A patio plays a major role in the overall look and feel of your home’s entire landscape. That’s why choosing the design, color, shape – and most of all the material – that your patio is composed of is a decision that should probably not be made on a whim. Instead, it is encouraged to take some time, do a little research, and become familiar with your options and their long-term ramifications before reaching a final verdict.

Unlike a lot of other decisions, this is one that is in fact “set in stone” (not that you cannot change it later on, but doing so may require a bit of an overhaul), so you’ll want to be certain you have made the right one. If this sounds overwhelming, fret not; rather, read on for a crash course and some guidance on How to Build a Patio

Patios can be made of either concrete pavers (also referred to as “pave stones” or “patio pavers”) or stamped concrete. Each has its pros and cons, many of which will be addressed throughout this article to help guide you in the direction of the patio that best suits you, your taste, space, budget and more.

A DEEPER LOOK INTO CONCRETE PAVERS

Pavers are a relatively easy to install, low-maintenance option with virtually unlimited design options. Paving stones are ideal not only for patios, but for walkways, pool decks, garden areas, floors, and sidewalks as well. Browsing at all of the different types will surely spark some terrific backyard patio ideas, too.

If you do your homework on how to properly install pavers, you will have a finished product that not only looks beautiful but also stands the test of time.

Pavers need to be installed one by one which may be a bit time consuming and can become somewhat tedious, but it will pay off in the long run by reducing maintenance requirements when compared to one large slab of stamped concrete.

Installing interlocking concrete pavers may require a little more attention to detail, if a repair is needed, it is not as big of a task to replace one or two pavers as having to repair a huge crack in a stamped concrete slab. Another plus is that there is no time needed for curing, so the pavers can be walked on immediately after installation.

If you are concerned with shifting over time and weeds growing through joints, there are solutions for that. The use of polymeric sands will help to maintain the joint over time and also deter – and for quite some time, prevent – pesky weeds from poking through your beautiful patio or walkway.

Combining the use of polymeric sands and an i nterlocking paver system, the instance of repair and maintenance is greatly reduced.

The maintenance of concrete pavers is fairly low. Occasional sweeping and hosing – and light re-sanding every three to five years – is enough to keep your pavers polished. Pavers are skid-resistant, and if permeable pavers are used water can drain right through the pavers, thus reducing water-runoff pollution.

For that reason and because they are so densely packed when they are made, pavers are less at risk for cracks and breakage. In the case that a crack or other type of damage is found, you need only replace the damaged one(s) – you do not have to restore a huge slab of your patio.

With pavers comes a great degree of versatility – something all landscape artists cheerily welcome as they plot their designs. Pavers come in a variety colors, shapes, textures, sizes and more.

Designers can choose a monochromatic design featuring pavers of all the same color but in different shades, shapes and sizes. Or they can opt for a more off-beat look by mixing and matching different types to create a deeper dimension distinguished by remarkable patterns, and eye-catching borders and bandings.

A DEEPER LOOK INTO A STAMPED CONCRETE PATIO

A stamped concrete patio is essentially concrete which has been poured over a level surface and, while still wet, stamped to mimic a brick pattern or other design. Oftentimes, primary colors followed by an accent color are added to the concrete mixture which is then stamped with a polyurethane stamp.

While there are many styles of stamp design forms, you may be limited to what stamp forms are available in your area. During the curing phase (about 3-4 days), the surface cannot be walked on.

Rather, this is when it is sealed for protection from dangers like pool chemicals and other elements that can speed up its wear and tear. The sealant also helps prevent cracking, chipping and premature rusting of any rebar embedded in the cement.

Maintenance of this type of patio is probably its worst downfall. Although it is fairly easy to install since the process consists of laying down a big slab of cement instead of installing pavers one-by-one, it does not fare well when the ground shifts; rather, it develops cracks quite easily.

Even a simple spider crack is a sign of doom for a stamped patio because the only way to fix it to replace the entire slab of concrete and essentially start from square one. On the contrary, interlocking concrete pavers are more flexible and can budge along with the earth as it shifts.

Clearly, repair of a cracked concrete patio is a big negative particularly because it requires ongoing upkeep which can cost you hundreds of dollars. If this type of ongoing repair cost is not conducive to your budget – or your time and energy – pavers may be the way to go.

A stamped patio has its pros, too, of course, as it is quite versatile in the ways in which it can be arranged. Novice landscapers can choose from a variety of patterns, colors and textures – and they can be used for a variety of places in your home including around the pool and indoor entryways. Plus you can simulate a number of looks like old-fashioned brick and other designs.

7. For incorporating a rock waterfall in your setting, try to keep nature in mind as you design. Include twists and turns in your water element – and integrate both small landscape rocks and larger boulder sizes, as would be seen in a natural stream setting.

8. Over time, old pots can accumulate dirt and salt deposits. Instead of chucking them, try combining equal parts water, white vinegar and rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle. Spray the pots, wait five minutes and then scrub it off with a plastic brush – your pots will look just about new and pepper your landscape with a replenished yet nostalgic touch.

9. To prevent dirt from working itself beneath your fingernails as you garden, try first drawing your fingernails across a bar of soap and creating an impenetrable seal before you dig them into hat fresh earth. Use a nailbrush to clean your hands afterward, et voila… you’ll find no dirt to dig out from beneath your nails.

10. Use the water you would normally drain out and discard after boiling veggies to pour into the soil of your potted plants or flowers. You’ll be pleased to find how much your foliage responds to the “soup of the day.”

11. Leftover tea and coffee grounds can increase the acidity of your soil. This method works particularly for rhododendrons, gardenias, and hydrangeas (by playing around the with soil’s acidity levels, you can actually alter the colors of your hydrangeas). A light monthly sprinkle (maybe a ¼” thin) can keep the soil’s Ph level just acidic enough for your garden flowers to thrive.

12. For super-tight budgets, the smallest details can make a difference like trimming hedges, planting a few seasonal plants or flowers, adding accessories like garden statues re-touching a fence with a fresh coat of paint or adding some low voltage landscape lighting. These “minor” enhancements can work just as well to improve your landscape as can some of the most outrageous garden ideas.

13. Turning your garden ideas into reality on your own is certainly thrilling. But make sure you goal is something you can complete successfully on your own. If you lack the time or proper tools, don’t shy away from hiring a landscape designer and/or other professional(s) who can tackle the job. Not only will this offer you some assistance, but you may learn a lot from a seasoned outdoor artist for your next go around- or to help a neighbor with their own escapade!

14. Mulch is inclined to get displaced and decompose over time. Topdressing is the best way to fix this: just rake up the old mulch to disperse it evenly over beds, and then apply about a 3” layer of new mulch to prepare your land for new growth.

15. Pool landscaping with trees comes with some caveats: Trees with a wide crown are a no-no since they create unwelcoming dampness, not to mention leaves falling into your pool. Also, trees with large root systems may harm the walls of your pool. The solution: plant trees no less than two meters from the pool and stray from those that attract flies and bees. 16. Fragrant flowers are probably the most popular element when it comes to landscaping. While there are plenty to choose from, some of the most conducive to a spring landscape are lilacs, Korean spice viburnum, Daphne plants, peonies, bearded irises, lily-of-the-valley and English lavender.

17. If your lawn is not top-notch for growing the mystical panorama you are shooting for just yet, you could opt for a clover lawn. Not only is clover a superb substitute for grass since it can grow on bad soil, it actually can improve your lawn because it acts like a fertilizer by dispersing Nitrogen throughout soil and aerating it. The best part is, it requires little maintenance requiring little water and no mowing! (You may want to occasionally cut the heads off of the clover if it begins to attract too many honeybees).

18. Another low-maintenance alternative is a meadow. Simply choose a seed mixture of meadow grasses and watch as your lawn turns into a charming, fairy-tale type of vista around your home. The upkeep requires only a bit of raking and mowing here and there.

19. If you are in the market for some lawn edging, your options are virtually endless depending on the look you are going for and the type of terrain on which you are applying it. One option, concrete edging, is a good choice as it minimizes mowing and allows you to create a serpentine path throughout your landscape. You can even play around with different heights to add contrast and texture, and to creates a smooth transition along a sloped or uneven piece of land.

20. Solar lighting – Implementing solar landscape lighting is an easy, and beautiful way to add a dramatic feel to your landscape. Enhancing your garden with this simple improvement is just that: simple – and you don’t need to be an electrician to do it. This embellishment, which can be installed along walkways, driveways, paved paths or steps leading to your front door, can have a major impact on how your home appears after nightfall while adding some safety and security as well. You can even spruce it up by having the light shine up at trees, walls or fences.

21. Retaining walls are versatile in both the structural support they provide as well as the aesthetic boost they offer in helping you accomplish your vision. There are several types of structures based on the environment and purpose of the wall:

Garden Wall: A garden wall is typically 2’ to 2.5’ tall or less. These smaller walls are usually used to provide support to smaller areas like flower beds and gardens, while giving your landscape an ideal aesthetic feel. They could also be used to enhance the end of an open-ended patio – giving it closure and beauty. These types of walls can be an interlocking, have pin connection, be gravity stacked, or mortared (depending on your support requirements).
Retaining Wall: These types of walls are usually less than 4’ tall or less. They are built to retain soil, in order to create a level area for a patio or a lawn. Retaining wall blocks typically have an interlocking or pin connection, and they are manufactured to withstand water and freeze/thaw exposure.
Engineered and/or Tall Retaining Wall: These types of walls are usually used in commercial settings or walls over 4’; but Residential applications include driveways or large changes in lawn elevation. Like regular retaining walls, they use interlocking or pin connections, but they may also require soil reinforcing (like geogrid). Because of the load-bearing requirements of this type of wall, hiring a licensed geotechnical engineer may be suggested.

Using masonry materials will not only add the decorative touch you are looking for, but will save you more work, time, and energy in the long run.

22. When it comes to pool landscaping and patio ideas, there are tons of elements to explore:

Patios assist in decreasing water drainage and keeping grass and mulch out of the pool. Pool deck surfaces offer you a chance to get that imagination churning when it comes to choosing bricks, pavers and concrete that comes in different colors, shapes, sizes and textures.
In additional to the aesthetic flair they provide, fences are a safety MUST for pool proprietors. For chiefly security reasons, 4’ wide-slat or wrought iron fencing is best. For appeal, you may be drawn to a slightly higher fencing (maybe 6’) with ornamental touches like capped pillars, curved fences or lattice.

A complementary color scheme (two colors opposite on the color wheel) is another beautiful choice. For example you can use one splashy color like blue and then add in red roses or bright green foliage throughout to contrast.
An analogous color scheme (three neighboring colors) is the most popular choice among landscape designers, and yellow, orange and red are the three most popular shades chosen.

You needn’t implement any of these schemes in your work; again, there is so much to choose from. If you feel overwhelmed, surf the net for more ideas or seek out professional consultation.

24. Movement within a landscape may be the most appealing feature you can add to your vista. Creatures like butterflies and hummingbirds add a splash of intermittent color here and there; they also add another dimension to an already breathtaking panorama. While butterfly-attracting foliage can vary from region to region throughout the U.S., some fundamental butterfly-seducers are aster, butterfly bush, lilac, globe thistle, zinnia, mint, dill, pansy and milkweed.

Keeping in mind that red and orange shades are most favored by hummingbirds, some welcoming plants to try are: larkspur, columbine, foxglove lily, butterfly bush, verbena, red-hot poker and scarlet trumpet honeysuckle.

25. Allow us to arrive full-circle here as we return to the advisement that your garden vision-turned-“blueprint” is the #1 priority for your spring landscape. Without a solid plan, you risk planting a vista that is not only haphazard and less attractive, but a real bother to take care of. If you need help getting your wheels turning and developing your “map”, a great suggestion is to invest in some landscaping software. A good application can provide you with:

Deck landscape patio and garden templates and/or samples
Video tutorials, paper manuals, and phone and email support
Topography and fence designing applications
Plant and flower encyclopedias
The ability to import and export images, and manipulate them to fit your desire
Shopping lists
Cost estimations

Without shying from even your wildest ideas or straying from what you think may be “impossible”, develop a solid draft of your dream. Research ideas, seek professional design help if needed, and most of all, have patience. THE BEST WAY TO WATERPROOF A BASEMENT

WHAT IS THE BEST BELOW-GRADE WATERPROOFING CURRENTLY AVAILABLE?

The best product would be a membrane system. With this, the system starts at the footer. The 38” membrane is applied over outside of footer and over lapped 2-3 inches each row as you go up the foundation.

All laps and terminations would have mastic applied to guarantee a waterproof seal. After the foundation is sealed, a drainage board or sheet would be installed over membrane to act as a water diverter between membrane and backfill.

IS “ROLLED RUBBER” MEMBRANE BETTER THAN “BLOCK BOND”?

The Rolled rubber membrane waterproofing would be considered a Cadillac of waterproofing materials. It is more complicated to install but it would be faster to install, saving money for the homeowner in labor cost.

It offers a higher degree of waterproofing and is a more durable product then the common block bond products available Thus making long term cost to waterproof a foundation lower.

WHAT IS A GOOD BUT ECONOMICAL WATERPROOFING?

If a homeowner is looking for a less expensive exterior waterproofing, they should consider a cementitious coating such as a foundation coating containing fiberglass.

These products have waterproofing characteristics and the fiber supplies additional strength to the foundation walls. These are inexpensive and easy to apply. As a secondary product to apply over this coating, you can apply a “Tar” foundation coating; an inexpensive coating for a little piece of mind that the foundation is waterproof.

WHAT IS THE BEST WAYS TO WATERPROOF A BASEMENT?

The best steps to waterproof a foundation would start at the beginning of construction during excavation. Slope the grade away from the home, then use perimeter drainage (coil perforated pipe) around outside of footer and under the concrete floor draining to the outside of foundation.

Cover with washed stone to prevent the clogging of pipe with topsoil. Also a vapor barrier under slab would be advised. With the application of the exterior membrane system, the homeowner should experience years of a dry foundation.

The interior masonry walls may be coated with a brush applied cementitious waterproof coating to further the degree of waterproofing.

IF MY BASEMENT IS WET, WHAT STEPS CAN BE TAKEN?

The key to addressing a leaking foundation is to redirect the water away from the foundation. Gutters and downspouts that redirect the water away from the house are an easy and very effective first step.

Grading the yard to direct water away from the residence is equally important Adding waterproof coatings to the interior of the foundation may help, but ultimately the water needs to go somewhere, so interior waterproofing of walls and floors is a temporary solution.

WHAT PRODUCTS CAN BE USED FOR INTERIOR WATERPROOFING?

Cementitious coatings are common, also the “paint” water proofers are available such as Drylok. A breathable clear sealer could also be used.

With Spring right around the corner, our imaginations are starting to run wild with projects that we would love to work on when the weather breaks. And one of the most popular projects (besides getting a tan) is to build a beautiful patio to lounge and have fun on. With the endless possibilities for creating a haven in your back (or front) yard, how do you know where to start?

Taylor Concrete has put our heads together and rounded up our top tips to planning your perfect patio this Spring.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF YOUR PATIO?

The most important step to planning a new patio is to figure out what the purpose of it is. Will it be for you and only you? If this is the case then a small, quaint area filled with pavers and minimal seating might be ok. But if you plan on throwing ginormous parties with you an 100 of your closest friends, you are going to need a large area, with many places for guests to gather, sit and converse. You also have to think about where they will set their drinks or snack plates.

Another question to ask yourself is would you like to add a fire pit or fireplace to your patio?

WHAT KIND OF ACCESSIBILITY WILL IT NEED?

The next thing to plan is what type of accessibility will the patio have? A kitchen or dining room entrance is common so it’s easy to grab a plate of food and get out to a patio table. Maybe you have an open kitchen/dining area/living room – in this case maybe an extended patio with two entrances would be ideal.

Are you planning a “getaway” patio? The purpose of a getaway patio is to getaway from the commotion; so you may want some exclusion with shrubs, trees and a walkway entrance. This will require a path from some exit of the house and maybe a small retaining wall .

WHAT SIZE FITS YOUR NEEDS?

Let’s go back to the purpose of the patio? Large, wide-open patios are perfect for parties and gatherings, while smaller patios are more intimate and great for relaxing with the family. Of course you need to build the patio to fit the amount of people that will be lounging on it; but let’s also think about the cost. A large patio can become costly, but for someone that has weekend BBQ’s it might be totally worth it! Set your budget before diving into construction.

WHAT SHAPE FITS YOUR NEEDS?

While thinking about the size of your patio, also think about the shape that would best suit your home. Does it need to wrap around a corner, or is a square patio ideal? Are there different levels with steps? You should decide whether you are looking to make a beautiful statement with elaborate designs or if function is your most important attribute.

WHAT MATERIALS WILL FIT THE PROJECT?

Building a patio with pavers allows you to have virtually unlimited options of shape and color. Make sure you do your homework and/or hire a professional to recommend options based on house color, accent color and any other features in your backyard.

WHAT FEATURES WILL SURROUND THE PATIO?

This is the final, and very important step before you start making moves to build a new patio. Now that you have drawn out and planned the best size, shape, materials and your budget – it’s time to add the features that will make your patio comfortable.

In the manufacturing business not only is it extremely important to ensure that products are made as efficiently as possible, but it is also important that the entire business is saving energy wherever possible. After all, a lean business means that costs stay down for customers as well.

Taylor Concrete Vice President, Rich O’Connor answers a few questions explaining how and why the process of manufacturing concrete products helps keep their customers happy.

Q: Why does Taylor concrete feel it’s important to run as energy efficient as possible?

[Rich O’Connor] It is critical to be an efficient manufacturer to survive as the economy has slowed and margins have become thinner. Energy efficiency is one part of the equation, along with reducing waste in materials and refusing downtime. This allows the manufacturing of our products to be more environmentally friendly and more cost-friendly to our customers.

Q: How does a customer of Taylor Concrete benefit from purchasing from an energy efficient supplier?

[Rich O’Connor] Customers primarily benefit through the lower costs of manufacturing achieved through energy and overall efficiency. In addition, our products may contribute toward achieving LEED accreditation on qualifying projects.

Q: What steps does Taylor Concrete take to ensure its manufacturing process is energy efficient?

[Rich O’Connor] Taylor upgraded our curing system in 2009 from a boiler to a high pressure steam generator which reduced our natural gas use to 1/3 of the boiler’s and cut the amount of water required in half. In 2010 we upgraded the lighting fixtures in all our buildings including our manufacturing plant to more energy efficient units.

Q: What other things does Taylor do to be energy efficient?

[Rich O’Connor] In addition to upgraded lighting in all our buildings, we employ a hybrid sales vehicle. We also added a lighter delivery truck to our fleet that gets 20% better MPG than a traditional block delivery truck. In our store, we replaced an inefficient air conditioning unit in the showroom with an energy star rated ductless heating & cooling unit.
