RETAINING WALL IDEAS TO INSPIRE YOUR NEXT PROJECT

By Jeff  Posted July 20, 2021In Blog

There are so many uses, types, sizes and styles of retaining walls. It is definitely NOT one size fits all. Your project may be a fit for a freestanding wall, a knee wall, or maybe a sitting wall or bench. Maybe you are working around gardening or a path and need a tree ring, garden border, columns or transition to a sidewalk. A straight wall might work, or you need a curved or serpentine shape.

Every project deserves the right wall, big or small. It starts with the materials. You can go with a concrete brick option, natural stone, wood or timber, or one of the many types of concrete block stacking systems on the market.

For a small garden wall, accent wall, planters up to about 30 inches high, a 12 inch long x 4 inch block is a good place to start. Heavy-duty large wall projects up to 20-30 feet tall, a large 18 inch x 8 inch block is more suitable. Anything more than 4 feet tall needs to be done by a licensed engineer who can determine the right materials and installation to be strong enough.

In general, for the nicest look, most durable walls that can be built fairly easily, concrete blocks and stacking systems are the way to go.

Taylor Concrete carries brick from the most reputable brands and also manufactures North Country Brick in a variety of sizes and finishes. For example, you can choose from the red and brown tones of Rustic Red, Jefferson, Franklin, Antique Red, Plantation, and Hickory. Or you could choose a grey like Cannonball, Fortress Gray, Wolf or Ontario or a lighter option in Blizzard.

With our suppliers, the possibilities for your retaining wall are endless.

If you are working on a planter, tree ring, or low retaining wall, Rockwood’s E-Z Wall® two-block, rear-lip system creates straight or curved walls.

Said to be one of the most cost effective systems out there for commercial and industrial applications, the Monument HD® is strong and versatile with fillable cores and an integrated anchor bar.

For a freestanding retaining wall with the popular aged and tumbled appearance, the Vintage™ 6 three-piece system builds straight or radius garden walls and seat walls without cutting.

Cambridge Pavers’ Olde English Wall™ is a striking double-sided tumbled modular unit with distressing on all surfaces. It’s great for freestanding walls, steps and edging.

Pyzique’s double-sided wall stone is ideal for walls up to 3 feet high and with fire or water features.

The popular natural backyard oasis look can be captured with Techo-bloc’s Rosemont chiseled texture. For the patio, outdoor kitchen, garden, pool deck, decorative walls and water or fire features, this modern style looks like natural stacked stone.

Techo-bloc’s most versatile wall stone might be the mini-Creta. Rustic with an aged finish on both sides, it’s great for freestanding patio walls, bars, grills and more. Colors include options like chaplain grey, onyx black, sandlewood and chestnut brown.

These are just a handful of examples that might be an inspiration for your retaining wall. At Taylor Concrete, we’re here to help in any step of the planning and building process.
